Behind the Name: takpe.my
“Takpe” is the casual Malay phrase we say when someone apologises or says thank you.
It literally means “it’s okay”, “no worries”, or “you’re welcome”.
But in Malaysia, we also say “takpe lah” when we’re absolutely NOT okay — when we’re hiding pain behind a smile because we don’t know how to ask for help yet.
I’ve always noticed this: sometimes when people say “takpe”, their body language says otherwise. The smile doesn’t quite reach the eyes. The shoulders are just a bit too tense.
In English, there’s “it’s okay to not be okay.”
This is the Malaysian version: Takpe kalau tak okay sekarang.
How takpe.my Started
I imagined someone on the verge, googling for help at 3 a.m., stumbling upon yet another cold government portal or an overwhelming, endless list.
What if everything felt heavy, clinical, and scary when you’re already struggling just to breathe?
I didn’t want another website that shouts “MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS HERE!”
I wanted the opposite: a space that meets people exactly where they are — inside their “takpe lah” moment.
So takpe.my is a gentle reclamation of that word. A reminder:
- • Takpe if you’re only here because Google sent you at 3 a.m.
- • Takpe, you don’t have to explain everything today.
- • Takpe je nak minta tolong — mental health pun sama macam sakit fizikal.
What takpe.my Is (and Isn’t)
Let’s be clear about what you’ll find here:
We ARE:
- • A directory — we help you find the right support
- • A starting point — when you don’t know where to begin
- • Free and accessible — no ads, no paywalls, no sponsored listings (for now)
We are NOT:
- • A crisis hotline — but we DO have a comprehensive list of helplines you can call.Check our helplines directory here
- • A therapy platform — we don’t diagnose or provide counselling
- • Trying to be everything — we’d rather be a warm, trustworthy doorway than a noisy, overcrowded room
By staying small and focused, we protect the gentleness that makes people feel safe.
The Kuih Thing (Yes, Really)
If you’re wondering why our icons look like Malaysian kuih... it’s intentional 😊
The founder had this slightly cheeky idea: mental health is like kuih.
Weird? Yes. That’s the idea!
Just take a wild guess why. And if you think you’ve figured it out (or if you’re just curious), drop me an email or let’s collaborate! Founder is active on LinkedIn!
It’s one of our efforts to not be too generic or clinical. Mental health doesn’t have to look like a hospital waiting room.
The Quiet Vision
As mental health gains more attention in Malaysian society, there’s space for something homegrown. Something that gets our context, our language, our way of handling difficult things.
Quietly (okay, maybe not so quietly), it started with a dream to combine tech and mental health. Eventually, the goal is to build the first truly Malaysian mental health support directory — one that future Malaysians will think of first when they or someone they love needs help.
Berangan besar? Maybe. But every big thing started as someone’s 3 a.m. idea.
